In IITA, the development of new genomic tools for molecular breeding and gene discovery is underway for the mandate crops. New candidate SNP, SSR and COS markers have been identified, in silico, from cassava Expressed Sequence Tags. Several hundreds of SSR markers have been validated using a diverse panel of cultivated cassava. Following filtering using various criteria, over a hundered new SSR markers, useful for fingerprinting and other molecular genetic applications, were developed.
